조기주는 1955년 서울에서 태어나 1982년부터 현재까지 서울에서 활동 중이다.

조기주는 1979년 이화여자대학교에서 서양화 전공으로 학사 학위를, 1982년 뉴욕 프랫 인스티튜트에서 회화 전공, 미술사 부전공으로 석사 학위를 취득했다. 1981년 뉴욕 브루클린 히긴스 홀 갤러리에서 석사청구 개인전, 1982년 주한미국문화원(서울) 개인전을 시작으로 40회의 개인전을 가졌다. 세종문화회관, 금호미술관, 갤러리 89 파리, 갤러리 오, 강남구 미디어 갤러리 등 대부분 서울에서 그리고 파리, 취리히, 상하이, 뉴욕 등지에서도 개인전을 열었다. 그녀의 작품은 평면회화(1981년~현재), 설치(1995년, 2005년, 2010년~2011년), 미디어 아트(1999년~현재), 단편 영화(2006년), 애니메이션(2007년, 2014년~현재)을 포함하여 다양하고 광범위한 매체를 아우른다. 특히 2008년부터 진행해 온 ‘The Stains of Life’라는 주제에 2014년 부터는 시멘트를 주재료로 사용하며 흑연, 구리와 쇳가루와 같은 현대 문명사회의 상징이자 부산물인 재료들을 더해 새로운 지평으로 진화하고 있음을 보여준다.

조기주는 경기문화재단의 옆집에 사는 예술가-용인(2025년), SOMA미술관의 아카이브 작가(2024년), 서울문화재단의 작품집 출판(2023년)에 선정되었고 대한민국 근정 포상(2020년)을 수여 받았다. 뿐만 아니라 조기주는 전남국제수묵비엔날레, 화화사유(畵話思惟), 서울시립미술관의 SeMA 소장품 쇼케이스, KIAF 2015, 파리 그랑팔레 드로잉 초대전 등 200회가 넘는 그룹전에도 참여했다. 저서로는 현대미술 안내서 『이것도 예술이야?』(2004, 현암사), 미술사 이야기 『이유 있는 예술』(2016, 노스보스), 그리고 조기주 작품집 『포용 Embrace the Stains of Life』(2025, K아트북) 등 3권이 있다. 조기주는 단국대학교 예술대학 학장을 역임했으며, 현재 전업작가로 활동하고 있다.

Born in Seoul in 1955, Cho Kheejoo has lived and worked in Seoul since 1982. She received her bachelor’s degree in painting from Ewha Womans University in 1979. After that Cho graduated Pratt Institute (NYC) with her master’s degree in painting, minor in art history in 1982.

She has held 40 solo exhibitions, starting with her master’s thesis solo exhibition at Higgins Hall Gallery in Brooklyn, New York in 1981 and her solo exhibition at the American Cultural Center in Korea (Seoul) in 1982. She has held solo exhibitions mostly in Seoul, including at the Sejong Arts Center Museum, Kumho Museum of Art, Gallery O, and Gangnam-gu Media Gallery, but also in Paris, Zurich, Shanghai, and New York. Her work encompasses a diverse range of media, including paintings (1981–present), installations (1995, 2005, 2010–2011), video and media art (1999–present), short films (2006), and animations (2007, 2014–present). She was selected as the artist who lives next door-Yongin by the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation (2025), an Archive Artist by the SOMA Museum(2024), and a Publication Award by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture (2023). Cho also received the Republic of Korea Award for Public Service (2020). Furthermore, she has participated in over 200 group exhibitions, including the Jeonnam International Sumuk Biennale, Hwahwasayu (畵話思惟), the SeMA Collection Showcase at the Seoul Museum of Art, KIAF 2015, and the Invitational Drawing Exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris. Cho has published three books: a guide to contemporary art, “Is This Art, Too?” (2004, Hyeonamsa), a history of art, “Art with a Reason” (2016, Northboss), and a collection of Cho’s work, “Embracing the Stains of Life” (2025, K Artbook). Cho Kheejoo served as Dean of the College of Arts at Dankook University and currently works as a full-time artist.
